Do We All Face the Same Reality?


Many people who are learning about virtual, augmented and mixed reality are a bit uncertain about the roles these new technologies will play in their organization. Despite the fact that they've been proven to be excellent for training purposes and for in-the-field maintenance and installation guidance, it’s still hard for many people to imagine how all these "new realities" will fit into their own operations.

Remember how weird it was to think about ditching paper-based, manual processes and turning to a digital-only system? It required trust and trial and error, and after many leading-edge users adopted it and saw positive results, digital technology solutions that automated field service processes became commonplace. 

The same thing is likely to happen with virtual reality. While many field service operations hesitate to dive in and embrace it, success in the field has convinced many solution providers that it’s inevitable. If they’re not already integrating it, they’re doing UX testing in the field, learning what’s working, and perfecting the technology so it’s easier and less expensive to implement. 

Until then, field service operations shouldn’t be overwhelmed with technical terminology, such as inside-out or outside-in positional tracking. They shouldn’t wonder too much about the difference between virtual/augmented/mixed reality, or worry about the type of head-mounted device they’ll eventually need. 

For now, they should just know it’s important technology that’ll have a positive impact on field service operations. And as they consider solution providers to meet the needs of today, they should look for vendors who are equipped to integrate virtual, augmented and mixed reality into their platforms tomorrow. For many users, it may not be a reality yet, but it’s coming.

Keep an Eye Out for the 2017
Field Service Benchmark Report 

We’ll soon have answers to lots of questions about field service management and technology solutions, because Gomocha is co-sponsoring a Benchmark Survey to be conducted at Field Service USA 2017, in Palm Springs (CA) April 18-21.
